A Brief Introduction to XMUT
Xiamen University of Technology (XMUT), which was established simultaneously with Xiamen Special Economic Zone, is a provincial public university, offering a wide array of degree programs at the undergraduate levels. It was built and developed under the joint efforts of Xiamen Municipal Government and the Fujian Provincial Government.
Currently, XMUT has a total enrollment of over 14,000 students. Over 11,000 are full-time undergraduate students and 3-year associate degree students (including international students) and part-time adult learners registered with XMUT total 3,000.The University has a full-time faculty of more than 700, among which one is Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 are specially invited professors who are awarded as Chinese Changjiang Scholars. Of the full-time faculty and researchers, 32.8% are professors or associate professors, while 70.8% have a master's or Ph.D. degree.
Xiamen University of Technology has two campuses, one in Siming District and the other in Jimei New District. The Siming campus is nestled at the foot of Honeycomb Hill at the south end of Xiamen Island. It borders South Putuo Temple and Xiamen University on the east and overlooks the famous Gulang Islet across Xiamen Harbor. Its convenient location and excellent environment both contribute to its fame. Jimei campus, covering an area of over 1000 mu, is newly built in the booming university district of Jimei with modern buildings and advanced facilities. It is opened in 2005 .The natural beauty of green hills and blue sea and the structural beauty of the campus have made it an ideal location for learning.
The university comprises 16 departments, which offer 24 bachelor's degree programs and 25 associate bachelor's degree programs in following major disciplines: Arts, Science, Engineering, Business and Administration. Besides these, an Architecture Design Institute, Die Design and Making Center, Space Information Technology Research Institute, Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology Research Institute, Information Administration Research Institute, and Technology Transfer Company have been founded. Moreover, over 50 fully equipped labs and engineering research centers have been established.

I. Geological Advantages
Xiamen University of Technology is located in Xiamen, which has been designated as one of China’s special economic zones.  Xiamen is situated on the southeast coast of Fujian Province. Facing Xiamen across the Taiwan Strait is Taiwan Island. It is well known as the political, economic and cultural center of southeast Fujian. The city holds a series of special honors like ‘UN Habitat Award’, ‘National Hygiene City’, ‘International Garden City’ and ‘National Civilized City’ It ranks No. 10 among Chinese cities in its comprehensive competitive strength. Its city glamour not only lies in its beautiful environment, salubrious climate, but also on its prosperous economy, favorable policies, the development of education and science. With the development of Western Strait Economic Zone and improvement on Mainland’s relationship with Taiwan, Xiamen is bound to enjoy an even better district advantage and a brighter future. Relying on geological advantages, XMUT will be developed rapidly into a specialized, refined university with strong competitive strength. The University remains cognizant of its principle: To build an open, practical, local and international university of science and technology.
II. Quick Development
Since XMUT was upgraded to the university offering a wide array of degree programs at the  undergraduate levels, it is on the high-speed track of development. While the faculty and students of XMUT engage in adjustment and optimization of associate bachelor's degree programs and scientific curriculum provision of bachelor's degree programs, the University launches associate bachelor's degree programs to cater to the needs of local mainstay industry development, supporting social and economic development of Western Strait Economic Zone. 251 Best Talents Project and 100 International Tip-top Talents Project have been implemented .In 2007,the university recruited about 150 staff, among which 40 people are professors, associate professors, researchers with Ph.D. degree or post-doctoral degree, some are tutors of Ph.D. students from national key institutions for higher learning upon approval by the State Council of People’s Republic of China or doctors returned from famous overseas universities. The capital construction of Jimei campus continues at high speed. Most recently, XMUT experienced a period of unprecedented physical growth and expansion along with the modern campus growth in Jimei. The university will put 100 million RMB into building up its Intensive Engineering Research Platform, which will consist of the following four research centers: Automobile Engineering Research Center, Precision Engineering of Intelligent Manufacture Research Center,, Photoelectric Information Engineering Research Center, and Modern Logistic Management Engineering Research Center,. The Intensive Engineering Research Platform is listed as ‘Xiamen’s Major Academic Research Projects’ upon approval of Xiamen Municipal Government. For the coming four years, the University will invest over 100 million RMB for laboratory equipments, so as to construct first -class, large-scaled, multi-functional and advanced laboratories.
III. Good Student Resource
The university continues to expand its student enrollment each year. In 2007, 4,200 new students were enrolled in XMUT. By Sept. 2007, full-time undergraduates and associate graduates reaches 11,000. XMUT is now a medium-sized university and is on its way to be large-scale university. The university has been one of the most popular universities in Fujian Province with good student resources. In 2006, the university entrance mark ranked third in Fujian province. In 2006, the university entrance mark ranked second in Fujian province. The marks of many students enrolled even exceeded the key university score-line. The mark of top student is in exceeds of 57 comparing with the key university score-line. The entrance mark for students in undergraduate programs from other provinces went beyond 20-30 points of ordinary university score-line. Besides, most of its enrolment marks set for 3-yeaar associate degree programs surpassed undergraduate programs score-line of other ordinary universities. In 2007,the number of students registered stays in ahead among provincial institution of higher learning. 99.21% undergraduate degree students registered, 90.75% 3-year associate degree students registered.
IV. Scientific and Practical Courses and Programs
All courses and academic programs offered by XMUT keep close pace with current scientific and industrial  development, serving the purpose of stimulating and challenging our students learning in modern engineering specialty fields, developing proactive and down-to-earth working styles, professional engineering competence, practical skills and innovative motives, Presently, all the 24 undergraduate degree programs are provided on the basis of serving local mainstay industries. XMUT also initiates new undergraduate degree programs serving local economic development in Fujian province: International Conference and Exhibition Economy, Photo-electricity Engineering, Culture Industry Management. Car Engineering and Manufacturing, Optoelectronc Industry Engineering, Costume Design and Engineering are provincial key undergraduate courses upon approval by Fujian Educational Administration. Logistic Management and Engineering is an undergraduate degree course catering to the seaport city development. Civil Engineering is an undergraduate course designed especially for urban construction. Undergraduate courses like Computer Science, Network Engineering, and Digital Cartoon Designing are specially prepared for IT industry development in Xiamen. Electronic Engineering, Electrical engineering meet the needs of pillar industry of Xiamen. International Business, E-business Management, Business English, Japanese, Financial Management are undergraduate degree courses for the needs of local business and tertiary industry. Specialized associate degree program have been developed. Auto Insurance Claim Assessment is an associate degree program pioneering in China, and Airline Service Training is a typical example of associate degree offer on the basis of cooperation between university and local enterprises.
V. Vast Cooperation in University Development
XMUT strives to strengthen cooperat ion with Xiamen Municipal Government and local enterprises for running the university on the platform of local economy and business. The university has signed agreements with many local enterprises for training future employees. Close relations have been established between major undergraduate degree programs and local enterprises, like Electronic and Automation Industry with ABB Group, the global leader in power and automation technologies, Auto Insurance Assessment with Dahua Group Corporation of Taiwan, Car Engineering and Construction with Xiamen Kinglong Motor Group Co. Ltd. , Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Automation with Shanghai Guangdai Company, Airline Service Training with Xiamen Airline Group, Cartoon Design with Taiwan Zicehui Digital Cartoon Institute, Taiwan Xiji Cartoon Design Company. Besides, XMUT has build internship bases jointly with local enterprises. Each undergraduate program has established 3-14 internship bases.
VI. Great Achievements in International Exchanges
XMUT attaches great importance to develop close ties with international higher learning instit utes and strengthen educational and cultural exchange with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The University has developed a close relation with a good number of overseas counterparts, such as Hong Kong University of Technology, the University of Regina in Canada, the University of Hull in Britain, Kochi University of Technology in Japan, New Zealand University of Technology, Dongeui University of Science and Technology in Korea, Induk Institute of Technology, Taiwan Mingchuan University, Taipei Education University , Kainan University .Corporation dimension and administration have greatly enhanced within these years. Since 1999, some of our students continued their studies towards Bachelor’s degrees or Master’s degrees in corresponding partner institutions in Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Japan and other countries and areas.
XMUT has enrolled foreign students from their overseas counterparts. Summer camps held jointly with British Council for students from United Kingdom prove to be fruitful, while Chinese Language Advanced Training Class for Korean students has been hosted successfully in XMUT. International professors and instructors teach in XMUT all year long. An International Cooperation School will open soon and it will be an important link between this university and prestigious overseas universities.

XMUT strives to cultivate personnel with special talents who have professional engineering co mpetence in modern engineering and technology while having good accomplishments in humanistic study, developing proactive and down-to-earth working styles, and innovative motives. Most of our graduates find their jobs in Xiamen. The employment rate for graduates continues to exceed 92% every year and rank NO.1 for 3 years continuously. Graduates are much demanded and sought-after in Xiamen’s personnel market. Many well-known enterprises employ large numbers of XMUT graduates such as Xiamen Airlines, Xiamen International Airport Group, Construction Bank in Xiamen, Agricultural Bank in Xiamen, Amoisonic Electronics Co., Xiamen Overseas Chinese Electronic Co.
